We know providing you with nutritious, diverse and delicious food is as important as the planet. This is why we prioritise freshness and sustainability, from farm to plate.
But how do we do it?
By serving fresh, seasonal produce
We work with our suppliers to ensure that we use seasonal produce wherever possible, so you know you're being served the best ingredients throughout the entire year. You can even meet the farmers and see how our food is being grown. But that's not all...
- We only use fish that are rated '1, 2 or 3' on the Marine Conservation Society's (MSC) Good Fish Guide.
- All of our meat and milk is Red Tractor Assured.
- All of our eggs (whole/liquid/dried) are always from a free-range production system.
- All of our catering outlets serve tea, coffee and sugar that is ethically traded and serve triple accredited coffee (Fairly Traded, Organic and Rainforest Alliance) in selected outlets.
By promoting plant-based options
With meat and dairy products accounting for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions, we offer a wide range of vegan and vegetarian choices on our menus every single day (check out our fully vegan café). We're even listed as one of PETA's 'most vegan-friendly' universities in the UK.
We wanted to make you aware of the environmental impact different food types have, which is why we have introduced carbon impact labels on our menus. So even if you're not vegan or vegetarian, incorporating more plant-based dishes into your diet can benefit you and the planet.
P.S. Be sure to join the LSE Food Club so you can get your 10th meal or drink free.
By reducing food waste
All of our food waste is sent to a local unit to be turned into usable compost or to an anaerobic digestion plant to be turned into energy, including all of our cooking oil which is turned into bio-diesel.
For our customers, we offer viable leftover food items from our cafés and restaurants on the Too Good To Go app at discounted prices so you can save some money while helping the planet.
Reduce, reuse, recycle
There's so many ways you can be sustainable in and off campus, from reusable cups and bottles to Tupperware.
Avoid a 25p charge every time you are served a drink in a single-use coffee cup by using one of our reusable KeepCups which you can purchase in any of our cafés. Read about all of the benefits of using a reusable cup here.
What else can you do on campus?
- Use our Bottle Up refillable water bottles, which you can find in all of our cafés and restaurants.
- Use our crockery instead of disposables.
- Use our wooden takeaway cutlery and paper straws (or bring your own metal straw).
- Re-home our used plastic food containers when we give them away for free. You can use them as storage containers at home.
Did you know? Not only are LSE are members of the Sustainable Restaurant Association with our three main restaurants achieving a 3-star rating, The LSE Garrick and Shaw Café have also been accredited with the Soil Association Bronze Award.
